Thai Cargo Ship Hijacked
Earlier today a Thai registered cargo ship carrying sugar from Brazil to Yemen was hijacked by armed gunmen. The hijacking occurred near the coast of Somalia. The hijackers are demanding an undisclosed sum from Thailand for the safe return of the ship's mostly Thai crew. There are 26 people reported being held as hostage.
The International Maritime Bureau (IMB) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) have classified the Somali coast as the most dangerous in the Indian Ocean.
Bureau director Pottengal Mukundan said the attack took place in international waters, and is asking all naval vessels in the region to assist hijacked ships and to be aware of the dangers of the region. |
