News: Thailand
Suspected Case of Bird Flu.

A 30 year-old man is suspected to have contracted bird flu (H5N1) and is currently under close observation at a hospital in Thailand's eastern province of Rayong.

Thailand is calling on APEC to join hands in the fight against bird flu by creating a stock-pile of antiviral drugs to help in the treatment and containment of the virus. The world continues to hold its collective breath hoping that human to human spread of the virus does not mature.

News: International
Thai Cargo Ship Hijacked

Earlier today a Thai registered cargo ship carrying sugar from Brazil to Yemen was hijacked by armed gunmen. The hijacking occurred near the coast of Somalia. The hijackers are demanding an undisclosed sum from Thailand for the safe return of the ship's mostly Thai crew. There are 26 people reported being held as hostage.

The International Maritime Bureau (IMB) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) have classified the Somali coast as the most dangerous in the Indian Ocean.

Bureau director Pottengal Mukundan said the attack took place in international waters, and is asking all naval vessels in the region to assist hijacked ships and to be aware of the dangers of the region.

News: Regional
Animals for Teachers.

In a questionable arrangement Kenya defends an animal deal with Thailand. Opposition demands that the government reverse and cancel the deal. Kenya indicates that PM Thaksin promised to fast-track and hire Kenyan English teachers in exchange for exotic animals for exhibition in Thailand.

Thailand also paid $1 million dollars for the transaction. Hopes are that the animals will increase tourisim within Thailand, which has seen year-after-year decrease for the past 2 years because of regional issues (SARS/Bird Flu) and more recently the tsunami that hit it's popular tourist attractions/locations in the south.
